Hydro 2019

KGAL are exhibiting at Hydro 2019 Porto. Portugal from 14th -16th October 2019

TKZ 2019

KGAL attended the XVIII Technical Dam Control International Conference, TKZ 2019, held at the Aparthotel Czarna Gora Conference Centre in Southern-Poland, between 9-13 september 2019. Russ Digby, KGAL Regional Managing Director, presented a paper entitled "Spillway Gate Drive Systems - How safe is safe?" and took part in some lively technical debates on various key topics relating to Dam Safety and Reliability Engineering. It was also a very good opportunity for networking and has enabled KGAL to establish links with individuals and organisations operating in the field of hydraulic structures based in Poland, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Kazakhstan.

Going underground

Under contract to AmcoGiffen, our engineers visited ICL UK Boulby mine to inspect and survey one of two 1000 Tonne capacity Ore Bins, where KGAL is required to design and detail a replacement bottom cone to accommodate new lining and flow management devices. All components will have to be transported to the Ore Bin via the mine's 1100m deep vertical shaft and underground roadways. The Ore Bin is used to hold freshly mined product before transport by conveyor and the material shaft to the surface. Working conditions present a challenge, with temperatures approaching 35˚c.

Flood & Coast 2019

(18-20 June Telford)

We'll be exhibiting again this year, so please pop by to Stand B11 to say hello.

ICOLD 2019 (9-14 June Ottawa)

Russ Digby and Ken Grubb will be presenting a conference paper at ICOLD 2019 on best practices with respect to procurement of dam protection gates, highlighting how custom and practice has not really kept up with the newer risk-based approach to design and showing how this can be addressed.

ZRA Visit Xayaburi

Two of KGAL's major projects met head on in March 2019 when six engineers from the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) travelled to Xayaburi in Laos for training.

See our Blog "ZRA meets Xayaburi" for details.

Africa 2019

KGAL will be exhibiting and presenting a paper at Africa 2019, the 3rd regional conference for water storage and hydropower development in Africa, this time on 2-3 April in Windhoek, Namibia. Hear about our ongoing work at Kariba Dam in the conference session and come to say hello to us on stand 39 in the technical exhibition.

Northern Ireland Control Structures

KGAL has been selected to undertake an inspection and assessment of all the water control structures under the management responsibility of DFI Rivers, where we will examine all structural, mechanical and electrical components at each of the structures. We are to supply detailed reports on their condition and provide recommendations for the cost of repairs, along with a maintenance plan.

Keadby Pumping Station Improvements

KGAL is currently providing independent technical advisory services on the MEICA scope of work, helping to take the project from the concept and options phase through the specification and contract documentation preparation, on to the commercial launch of the project in early 2019.

MEICA Aspects of Dams

Russ Digby and Ken Grubb gave an evening presentation to the British Dam Society at the ICE headquarters in Great George Street, London, on 14th January. Their talk covered many mechanical, electrical and control issues that are directly relevant to the use of gated structures within dams. The lecture was shown live in various BDS national hubs and is also available online to ICE members at
