Nam Kong 2 on track for completion in early 2017.
Whessoe Sdn Bhd and KGAL Consulting Engineers Ltd have joined forces once again, this time to complete the 66MW Nam Kong 2 hydropower project located in the south of Loa PDR, 45 miles south of Attephu. This will be the first 100% Lao owned hydropower project over 15MW – and the first major fabrication job for Whessoe’s new permanent workshop facilities in Vientiane.
CS Energy, acquired the 90% complete project earlier this year from Hoang Anh Atteapue Electric Company, and appointed Whessoe/KGAL to design, fabricate and install the steel lining for the two bottom outlet diversion tunnels in the Main Dam. The scope of work includes the refurbishment of the diversion tunnel outlet gates, the design and installation of guides to provide isolation at higher water levels, and the design, manufacture and installation of steel linings to the existing diversion tunnels. Also included in the scope is the supply, installation and commissioning of two trash racks, two gate valves and two cone valves, including the provision of associated gate and valve control systems.
Michael Simcock, General Manager Whessoe Lao/Business Development Manager Global, said “The award of this critical contract to a complex dam comes at a very exciting time for both Whessoe and KGAL's growth here in the Lao PDR and throughout the region – and it’s a great project for our new workshop in Vientiane."
Fabrication at Whessoe’s new workshop began in November. The dam, now almost complete, presented some unique challenges, but with the benefit of KGAL’s design expertise and Whessoe’s field and project managers’ experience, these have been overcome and the project is on schedule to be finished and ready for impounding on 5th May 2017.
