KGAL (Kenneth Grubb Associates Limited) was formed by Ken Grubb in 1991 and today, as KGAL Consulting Engineers Ltd., offers a complete structural, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical engineering service in the field of hydro-mechanical equipment, through all stages of a project from conceptual design development to final commissioning on site.
The business is widely recognised as the UK’s leading specialist consultant in the field of hydro-mechanical design and our portfolio covers all manner of specialist moving structures and systems including hydroelectric schemes and dams, energy turbines, water control gates (hydraulic steel structures), valves, pumping stations, moving bridges, Ro-Ro linkspans, boatlifts and bespoke construction equipment.
The company currently employs over 30 experienced staff, including chartered and incorporated engineers and technicians, across two UK offices: Poole and Wakefield.
Whilst based in the UK (today accounting for just over 60% of revenue), our consultancy has truly global credentials. We are currently working in Norway, Australia, Laos and Malaysia but have direct experience of work and projects in the following countries:
Hydroelectric power schemes
KGAL employs a number of engineers with decades of experience from the likes of Kvaerner Boving, GE Hydro, Andritz and Biwater Hydropower. We can provide consultancy services covering:

With a high level of experience in hydropower, KGAL has partnered with Turboinštitut of Slovenia, with turbine design and manufacturing facilities and a laboratory capable and equipped to perform model acceptance testing in accordance with IEC 60193, to offer a wider range of services and expertise. This means we are equipped to offer hydro-electric efficiency improvement modelling, and provide refurbishment options.
Gates for flood defence and river control
A major portion of our work relates to flood defence in some form - be it tidal defence or fluvial control. We’ve designed all types of gates for this purpose including vertical lift sluice gates, mitre gates, sector gates, bottom hinged fishbelly gates and radial gates. And, as the UK’s leading specialists, we’ve also helped clients operating the majority of the UK’s large storm barrier / barrage schemes.
Gates for navigable waterways
Our portfolio of lock gates is unchallenged as the largest in the UK in the field of marinas, inland waterways, large commercial ports, small ports and harbours. Our deep experience in the design and engineering of lock and dock gates, for port and marina applications, is unmatched worldwide. From feasibility studies through to fully-detailed manufacturing drawings, we provide a comprehensive, single source service for all aspects of water control in the port, marina and inland waterways environments.
In addition to our core activities of gate design, we have a demonstrable track record in the field of pumping station and trash screen design, specification, inspection and refurbishment.
Our growing portfolio of bridge projects covers all manner of moving structures including bascule, lifting, retractable, and swing bridges. Our scope of capability covers anything between bridge inspection and asset surveys up to, and including, complete structural, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical design. As a natural extension to our application of expertise in the field of bridges and equipment in a maritime environment, we have provided similar services with respect to ship access equipment including vehicle linkspans at Ro-Ro facilities and passenger access systems at ferry and cruise terminals.
Thanks to the knowledge, skills and vast experience of our engineers, we are proud to claim unrivalled expertise in designing and dealing with the unexpected in terms of mechanical, structural, electrical and hydraulic engineering. A perfect project example of this capability was the Falkirk Wheel Boatlift in Scotland where KGAL was part of the consortium appointed to develop the exemplar detail and generate the technical specifications for issue to Design & Build contractors.
