Project Management in Scottish Highlands
KGAL have been appointed by Scottish and Southern Energy plc to project manage a number of Flood Gate Control System design and build contracts at hydro-electric plants throughout the Scottish Highlands.
Having played a key role in the functional safety review of existing systems, we are proud to continue our long-standing relationship with Scottish and Southern Energy.
The design of the flood gate controls and operating equipment has to strike an appropriate balance between the various hazards that may arise if there is equipment failure. The prime purpose of the gates is flood control so that the integrity of the dam is safeguarded and upstream and downstream flooding is minimized. However spurious opening of a flood gate has the potential of being a hazard to river users downstream of the dam causing a surge in the river water level. An important additional role for the flood gates is to provide river compensation flow on loss of turbine flow.
