KGAL provides professional advice to Hochtief

The Western Gateway Infrastructure Scheme (WGIS) is a major project to significantly improve traffic management as part of the Salford Gateway development by The Peel Group, itself a plan to realise Port Salford (an inland multimodal freight interchange on the Manchester Ship Canal), Salford City Stadium and Stadium Retail Centre.

WGIS will reduce traffic on local roads and relieve peak time motorway congestion, thanks in part to a new A57 dual carriageway and a new lifting bridge across the Manchester Ship Canal linking Salford to Trafford. This part of the project was awarded to the Hochtief (UK) / Buckingham JV and Hochtief asked us to provide engineering technical review services for the associated mechanical and electrical designs for the lifting bridge.

The bridge design is unusual; not only will it carry a dual carriageway plus pedestrian and cycling facilities over the canal, it will also be ‘future proof’ with a dimension and design load capable of accommodating Manchester’s Metrolink tram / light rail service.
